There is no cure for polio. Yet this highly infectious and debilitating disease – which mainly affects young children and can cause lifelong paralysis – can be prevented with a vaccine that costs only $0.60.
In the 1980s, polio paralyzed at least 1,000 children every day all over the world. But today, after international efforts to immunize every child everywhere, 5 million people are walking who would otherwise be paralyzed and the world is almost polio-free.
Several regions of the world have been certified polio-free,
yet polio remains endemic in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. And as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio.
